Freedom From Toxic Beauty

Because beauty should be good for you.

About 3 years ago, right around this time, I was trying to decide between starting my photography business or becoming a Beautycounter consultant.

I was pretty equally passionate about both of these things but didn’t think I could do them both well at the same time. I obviously don’t regret my decision because I never would have dreamed that Erika Taphorn Photography would become more than a side hustle, let alone my permanent full-time job that gives me so much freedom with my kids and the chance to do something I absolutely love…

But I think it says a lot about Beautycounter too, that so much time has passed and yet, I’ve fallen even more in love with their mission and the safety and comfort of using clean beauty and self-care products on myself and our family.

Healthy living has been so important to me since the very beginning of motherhood, and especially since home-owning. I’ve tried and I’ve failed, many times. The choices I thought I was making in our best interest have turned out to be lies backed by funded studies and Greenwashed brands. But Beautycounter has stood the test of time for us, through all of the researching and educating I have done in all areas of healthy and clean living.

Their Never List contains over 1800 ingredients that are banned from their products. The United States only bans 30 of these with the last law regulating product ingredients having been passed in 1938!! Beautycounter goes above and beyond for product safety and is fully transparent with the ingredients they use. Everything I could ever ask a company to consider when creating products to be used on my body and my children, Beautycounter is already so many steps ahead.

Not only is Beautycounter revolutionizing beauty and self-care through their company, but they are fighting for consumer freedom and advocating for more standards to be set across the board. The goal is that someday, we don’t have to CHOOSE clean, it will just be what is expected of the industry.

“Over the past six years, we have worked with lawmakers on both sides of the aisle to ensure issues like ingredient review, labeling and recalls for products that cause harm are consumer safety priorities. In addition, our Consultants host hundreds of District Meetings with Members of Congress advocating for updates to laws governing personal care products. Our collective voices are making a difference: more than 1,000 meetings, 10,000 calls and 100,000 emails later, more lawmakers than ever are placing cosmetics safety at the top of their legislative agendas.”

Full disclaimer: I’ve tried other “non-toxic” brands a dozen times. I’ve ran to Ulta every time over the last few years that I’ve waited too late to order before and run out, hoping I’ll like a different product and save some money… and I end up right back on Beautycounter every time.

I have conversations about these products on a weekly basis and always have to apologize that I’m not a consultant and refer people over to someone else. I’ve advocated for the importance of their safety for 3 years now and not made a dime off of it.

I’ve never wanted to be one of those people whose authenticity was questioned because I have something to sell you. And that’s held me back.

But it’s officially official and I’m putting that fear behind me. I couldn’t be happier to finally have joined Beautycounter’s mission to fight for safety and freedom from harmful ingredients. And I’d be so grateful for your support!
